Portland’s famous food carts are scattered all over the city’s five (now six) quadrants, over 600 in total, in over 60 pods — collections of food carts! Let us put you on one of our lightweight, beautiful bicycles and guide you on a 6-10 mile (10-18 km) culinary experience through some of our favorites, sampling everything from Oregon farm-to-table delights to snacks appropriate to late-night cravings.
Portland is the first city where food trucks, or “carts,” as we call them, were permanently parked instead of going and coming every day. We’ll meet you in the thriving SE industrial district, at our location near the real deal: the very first food cart pod. Here you’ll be fitted for a bike and helmet, and we’ll head on a neighborhood ride to three of pods we visit with our friends and family, as we unfold the fascinating (and only told by us!) tale of how Portland came to be the epicenter of the food cart craze. Sample food at each pod, with an option for dessert, and some stops that tell a bit more to the food cart story. One of our stops is not a “cart” or a “truck” at all, but a refurbished imported vehicle that should delight you (we’ll save the surprise for the tour).
Our focus is on locally-owned businesses with a great story; we’ll take you to our favorites, many of which were important in creating the food cart scene as it exists today. Without these unique and passionate people, we may not have even half of what Portland offers to residents and guests alike. Expect flavors and fusions that tell not only a culinary, but also a cultural, tale. Bikes, helmets and plentiful food samples provided. 3.5 to 4 hours, $85.
