Silver Falls State Park, only a little more than an hour from Portland, is a unique geologic canyon filled with stunning and diverse waterfalls. Once proposed as a national park, the canyon was rejected in the early 1900s because of forestry operations in the 1880s leaving it “unsightly.” Since then like a vengeance, the forest has been reborn, and it is a rich place filled with wildflowers and now-stately trees.

We will start in Portland and drive out through the historic town of Silverton, about an hour from Portland, and then through Christmas tree farms to the surprising canyon.
With medium-intensity hikes, we will explore some of the most stunning and exciting waterfalls and geologic formations in Oregon. Over the three hours we are here at Silver Falls State Park, we will visit 3-8 waterfalls with a point-to-point hike (5-6 miles / 8-10 kilometers) with your guide starting you at one end and picking you up at the other. For those who may want to do a shorter hike, there is an option for two medium-length hikes (1-2 miles/3-5 kilometers each). We will walk around and behind South Falls, past lower South Falls, and have the exciting experience of walking past the sheet of water coursing over the falls; at North Falls, we will have the unique opportunity to see lava tree casts and near-old growth trees.
Please note this hike is not technical but does have a lot of up and down hills and stairways; it’s doable for most visitors who are comfortable walking the distance required.

We’ll have plenty of opportunity to have those iconic experiences with the waterfalls you probably saw on TikTok or Instagram as well as spending some time learning about the old growth forests of Oregon and lichens, mushrooms, blossoms and berries! You will go away tired but you’ll be energized by the waterfall spray.
