Alberta Arts is a Portland Oregon neighborhood known for being the center for the historic Black community in the region; for its radical and activist art; and for its way of embracing authenticity and culture. We’ll walk through the heart of Alberta, absorbing it all. Starting in the art plaza next to Frock Boutique, 1438 NE Alberta.
In 1903 the Alberta streetcar line spurred the growth of this then-suburban neighborhood. Over the next decade, as the population of Portland doubled, Alberta thrived and its business district would mirror those streetcar districts throughout the city. In the 1940s, as the automobile took over, redlining created a thriving multicultural neighborhood that would become known for art, jazz, great food, and a tight community. We’ll explore this now hip neighborhood, its ice cream, coffee, art, history, and find out what makes it so special.
In this 1 mile / 1.5 km waterfront walking tour, throughout the length of eastern Alberta Street, we will explore the art, history and unique flare of the people here. Walking past boutiques and stores like the Alberta Cooperative Grocery and the Bantu Island Food Cart Pod; Close Knit yarn store and the many bookstores, we will learn about the neighborhood and decide where you might want to spend time after the tour is over.

The Alberta Arts District History walking tour leaves from the art plaza in front of Frock Boutique, 1438 NE Alberta, and we keep our groups to 20 or fewer people for intimate, personal experiences. 1 mile / 1.5 km, 1 hour. It is a one-way walking tour that will end near the Alberta Rose Theatre.
