Our primary/elementary school focused walking tour takes a similar approach to our Soul of the City walking tour in content, but with a more slow-paced and interactive style. Our aim is to tell a rich, deep and nuanced story of the city with simple stories and lots of chances for children to learn by touching, smelling, discovering and questioning in their own way.
Custom School Soul of Portland Walking tour
Typical schedule 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., starting at Shemanski Park, $10 per student
What geology and climate attracted the first people here? How did they interact with this place; how did they eat, who did they trade with, what were their monuments? How did people groups shift over time? What has created the Portland we know today — the social, economic, cultural, and activist movements? Who did we want to be in the early days of our written history — and did we achieve it? What do other people know about us, and is it true? How do we see ourselves both early in history of European settlement and today? What are our favorite (and least favorite) pieces of public art? Our elementary school-focused walking tour covers a wide variety of topics in an engaging way to answer these questions and many more. We can tailor the approach to suit your curriculum and the needs of your students. The tour is about an hour-and-a-half, with interactive elements so the children can touch, smell, discover and question the city on their own.
For children who are in need of low-cost or no-cost services, we are happy to waive fees.
